Balinese Healing

Did JRO choose to become a Balian?

Not exactly. In Balinese tradition, a Balian is believed to be born with a calling rather than choosing healing as a profession.

This calling comes with particular abilities and a responsibility to serve the community. When someone resists this path, repeated illness, loss or misfortune may be understood as signs that their calling can no longer be ignored.

This was JRO’s experience. He resisted his calling for around twenty years, pursuing a career as a restaurant and nightclub manager while helping people without payment for more than fifteen years. After facing a series of difficulties and losses, he finally accepted healing as his full-time path. Across his years of practice, he has worked with more than 80,000 people.

Is a Balian the same as a shaman?

A Balian may sometimes be described as a “Balinese shaman” because both can work with spiritual energies, ritual and the unseen dimensions of health. However, the terms are not the same. “Shaman” is a broad name used for practitioners from many cultures, while a Balian belongs specifically to Bali’s traditional healing system.

Depending on their calling, a Balian may work spiritually, energetically or physically through prayer, touch, massage, sacred rituals and herbal medicine. Their practice is shaped by Balinese Hindu spirituality, ancestral knowledge and their recognised role within the local community. Research on the role of Balians in Balinese society supports this culturally specific understanding.

When did JRO discover his abilities, and how did he learn to use them?

JRO began receiving teachings through dreams when he was around ten years old. By fourteen, his body started to move instinctively when he was near someone who was unwell, and he could sense what was happening inside them without understanding why.

In 2008, an encounter with an elderly man led him to seek guidance from three Balinese spiritual teachers. A period of prayer, cleansing and meditation at three temples then helped him understand and master the gifts that had been with him since childhood.

What does JRO perceive during a reading?

JRO reads a person’s aura and energy to sense emotional, mental, spiritual and physical blockages. Through touch, he can also feel tension or imbalance affecting the muscles, nerves and internal organs. What he perceives guides how he adapts the treatment to each person.

People often ask JRO how he knows what he sees or feels. He usually answers with a smile:

Ask a chilli why it is hot, or why it changes colour as it grows. It cannot explain! That is simply how nature made it. It is the same for me. I was born this way. I don’t know why. I just know.

JRO
Is JRO a recognised Balian by the Indonesian government?

Yes. JRO is registered with the Indonesian authorities as a Penyehat Tradisional, a traditional health practitioner, under an STPT (Surat Terdaftar Penyehat Tradisional). Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 61/2016 defines the STPT as proof that a practitioner has registered to provide empirical traditional healthcare, and the framework recognises approaches using manual techniques, energy techniques and traditional herbal preparations. The correct description is a government-registered traditional health practitioner. That registration also reflects the trust he has built within his own community.

Treatments

What healing methods does JRO use?

JRO combines energy healing, Balinese spiritual healing, muscle and nerve acupressure, herbal medicine, meditation, mantra and purification rituals. He has also studied hypnotherapy to explore emotional experiences more deeply.

He adapts the combination of methods to each person and to what he observes throughout the healing process.

Do I need to be seriously ill to see JRO?

No. In fact, JRO’s message is simple: please come earlier. Do not wait until you are seriously ill.

After working with so many people, one thing he feels deeply is that too many arrive only when they are already extremely unwell. Some travel from Europe with advanced cancer after years of medical treatment, at a point when their doctors have very limited options left. JRO will always do his best to offer complementary support to someone in that situation.

But he wishes people would listen to their bodies and seek support sooner, before the body is exhausted, a problem has been ignored for years or illness becomes the only thing forcing a change. Part of his work on social media is to help people recognise earlier signs, take greater responsibility for their health and way of living, and remain balanced through difficult periods of life.

Why does JRO recommend three sessions?

Meeting more than once lets JRO observe how your body, mind and energy respond after each treatment, and adapt the next session accordingly. Healing is understood as a process rather than a single intervention: each session reveals another layer.

Is this a replacement for medical treatment?

No. This work sits alongside your medical care, never instead of it. JRO’s work is complementary. It does not replace medical diagnosis, prescribed treatment, medication, rehabilitation or emergency care, and we do not promise a cure or a particular outcome.

If you are living with a serious condition, please stay under the supervision of your healthcare professionals and do not change anything they have prescribed without them.

Who provides the treatments?

At present, all treatments and Healing Journeys in Indonesia are led by JRO. Gigi supports communication and journey planning but is not currently offering sessions or taking part in treatments.
